Keep your home safe whilst on holiday

Going on holiday is an exciting time for all the family, but how can you keep your home and belongings safe when you’re away?

Try to make it look like someone is at home

You need to give the impression that you are home in any way possible. Start by keeping your curtains open as having your curtains closed throughout the day is a big sign that someone isn’t in the property. Make sure that you don’t leave any valuables in direct view from a window. Letters hanging out of your postbox is always a sign to burglars that someone isn’t home, ask someone to remove these for you if you can.

Keep your property secure

Always keep all of your doors and windows locked. As well as keeping your house safe from crime, keeping your windows shut could also minimise the spread of a fire if one was to start whilst you’re away through the lack of oxygen in your home.

Unplug appliances

Before you go away, unplug as many appliances as you can from the wall – you might even want to empty your fridge and turn it off at the plug too.  Turning off your appliances is crucial to ensure an electrical fire doesn’t start whilst you’re not there. This is also means that you will be saving money on energy bills too.

Give a spare key to someone you trust

It is recommended that you let a family member, neighbor or friend know details of your holiday so they can be aware of when to look out for your property. You could also give them a spare key so they can check over your home if needed.

Don’t post when you are going away on social media

It is very easy for people to get excited to post about where, when and who they are going away with on social media – you don’t know who is looking at your posts and who is aware that your home is empty. It’s always best to post about a holiday after it’s happened so people aren’t aware of when your home is empty.

Get insured

Just in case anything does happen whilst you’re away, it’s always good to have contents insurance to make sure you’re covered for your belongings. My Home Contents Insurance is an affordable way of insuring your belongings.
